![When we testified to state legislators that the flawed term “gender-based violence” should not be further entrenched in the Revised Code of Washington, one lawmaker who contended with our position said, “victims of intimate partner homicide are overwhelmingly female, overwhelmingly male-perpetrated.”
Washington-based counselor and author Ann Silvers says the mainstream belief that vastly more women than men are killed by an intimate partner — often cited as five or six times more — is based on a misinterpretation of a study from 2013.
In her recently-released second edition of Abuse OF Men BY Women: It Happens, It Hurts, Let’s Deal With It, Silvers provides these statistics:
- The U.S. Department of Justice found the following breakdown of victims of intimate partner homicide in 2021: female victims 61% (1,690) / male victims 39% (1,078). That is a ratio of 1.6 to 1.1 [source: Female Murder Victims and Victim-Offender Relationship, 2021]
- The United Nations found the following breakdown of victims of intimate partner homicides across 78 countries in 2022: female victims 66% / male victims 34%. That is a ratio of 2 to 1. [source: Gender-related Killings of Women and Girls, 2022]
To those statistics, which many would find surprising, we add one more statistic from further back:
- The U.S. Department of Justice found the following breakdown of victims of intimate partner homicide in 1998: female victims 72% (1,320) / male victims 28% (513). That is a 2.6 to 1 ratio. [source: Intimate Partner Violence Against Women Declined from 1993 Through 1998]
It is indeed accurate that female victims of murder are much more likely to have been killed by an intimate partner than male victims of murder.
It is also accurate that when a woman kills someone, her victim is much more likely to be an intimate partner or a family member than when a man kills someone.
Both of these facts should be understood in the context that a lot more men than women commit murder and a lot more men than women are victims of murder. Men mostly kill other men.
Where does the idea that women are six times more likely than men to be killed by an intimate partner come from?
