Tolerance for misandry by Seattle’s largest newspaper is a clear-cut example of double standards.
Washington Initiative for Boys and Men insists that misogyny and misandry are both poisonous to much-needed efforts toward reducing antagonism and increasing empathy between the sexes.
Our December 2020 blog post “Seattle Times dating columnist Marina Resto is no fan of men” drew attention to the misandrist record of the @dating_in_seattle Instagram profile, which Ms. Resto operates. We documented a 13 to 1 ratio of posts criticizing men to posts criticizing women. Unfortunately, the social media account has been promoted on the website of Seattle’s largest newspaper for over two years.
Ms. Resto’s articles and Instagram handle are still on the Seattle Times website, but the newspaper has not published anything written by her since October 2021. It is unclear whether they have finally cut ties with their notoriously sexist dating columnist.
“Why do you always bash men?”
In March 2021, we appended to our earlier blog post a video of Ms. Resto giving the middle finger to the camera, accompanied by text reading “Why do you always bash men?”
Here we provide an additional video documenting Marina Resto’s public feelings toward men. We pose this question: Who would stand by such comments if the genders were reversed and instead it was a man denigrating women?
Why does the Seattle Times endorse this content?
Seattle Times staff either have not vetted the @dating_in_seattle Instagram account they are promoting, or they vetted it and did not notice its distinct pattern of bad-mouthing men. A third possibility is the newspaper’s staff vetted it, noticed male-bashing, and proceeded to promote it regardless.
There are hundreds of thousands of single men and women in the Seattle area who want a mate. Many of them have been hurt in past relationships. They need to heal and regain trust. Greater empathy between the sexes — not greater animosity — is what is needed. Anyone is free to run a misandrist social media profile like @dating_in_seattle. But for the Seattle Times to endorse it is evidence of poor judgment and a tolerance for anti-male bigotry.
This blog post is our third or fourth occasion of criticizing the Seattle Times for anti-male gender bias. However, we were pleased to publish a blog post this past February praising the newspaper for an article about Big Brothers Big Sisters that showed impressive concern for the well-being of boys.
